Independence in Communication
Finding Your Voice Every Day

As we celebrate 250 years of independence—gathering with family, enjoying summer, and reflecting on the freedom to live life on our own terms—one of the most important parts of independence is something we often take for granted: our ability to communicate.

For individuals experiencing changes in speech or language, communication can feel more difficult—but it does not mean losing your voice. With the right tools and strategies, you can continue to express yourself, make choices, and stay connected to the people you love.

Communication is more than just talking. It’s sharing a story, asking for help, laughing with friends, and being heard. That’s where AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) comes in. AAC simply means using tools or strategies to support communication—and it can be as simple or as advanced as you need it to be.

Ways to Support Your Independence in Communication:
• Use a notebook or communication board to write or point to words
• Try a text-to-speech app on your phone or tablet
• Keep important phrases written down for easy access
• Use gestures, facial expressions, and pointing to help get your message across
• Practice speaking slowly and clearly, one thought at a time
• Ask family and friends to give you time to communicate

Small Changes Make a Big Difference:
• Sit face-to-face when talking
• Reduce background noise (TV, crowds)
• Take your time—there’s no rush
• Don’t be afraid to repeat or try again

❤️ You Still Have a Voice

Even if communication looks a little different, your thoughts, your stories, and your voice still matter. There are many ways to stay connected, engaged, and independent.

This July, as we celebrate freedom, remember—independence in communication is possible, and support is always available.
