Kelly Cantrell of Empowered Speech Pathology Speaks at ALS Association of Alabama Support Group

On August 14, Kelly Cantrell, M.S., CCC-SLP, owner of Empowered Speech Pathology,
participated in an educational program hosted by the ALS Association of Alabama.
Cantrell shared her expertise on the vital role speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play
throughout the ALS journey, with a focus on maintaining quality of life for individuals and
their families.
Her presentation highlighted two key areas: Dysphagia Management and
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). She explained how early
identification and intervention for swallowing difficulties can help ensure safety, comfort,
and nutrition. Cantrell also demonstrated how AAC tools—from simple communication
boards to advanced speech-generating devices—empower individuals with ALS to
continue expressing themselves even as the disease progresses.
“Living with ALS presents unique communication and swallowing challenges, but no one
has to face them alone,” said Cantrell. “Speech-language pathologists provide
education, strategies, and tools that make a meaningful difference in a person’s quality
of life.”
The ALS Association of Alabama continues to partner with professionals like Cantrell to
provide patients and caregivers with resources, support, and guidance for navigating
the challenges of ALS. Kelly Cantrell has been invited to be a consistent resource in
Baldwin County’s ALS Association’s. She is thrilled to be invited. “The resources, that
ALS Association coordinator Bonnie White has for these patients and families are
amazing. I am happy to be one of those!”, says Kelly.
