Love has a powerful effect on the brain, that influences emotions, behavior, and even cognition.

When you’re in love or love someone deeply, your brain releases a chemical, dopamine, which is associated with pleasure, motivation, and reward. This creates feelings of euphoria and makes you crave more time with your loved ones. Oxytocin, another neurotransmitter, also known as the “cuddle hormone,” is released during physical touch, like hugging or connecting arms. It strengthens emotional bonds and trust between loved ones.

The neurotransmitter Norepinephrin increases our heart rate, energy, and alertness when we are with those we love. Long-term love increases endorphin levels, which promote feelings of comfort, security, and emotional stability. This helps explain why long-term relationships can feel “calmer” but deeply fulfilling. Love activates the same region of the brain involved in addiction.
